COPA #149 Runway Painting Volunteers

11-29 Runway Marker Painting

Members of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) #149 spent the morning repainting the runway markers along the turf runway 11-29 at the Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport.  The runway was built during World War 2 as one of three paved runways.  After the war, the surface gradually deteriorated and the runway was closed in the 1980's.  In 2018 COPA #149 members raised funds to rehabilitate the runway as a turf strip.  Many volunteer hours went into the project, and now it is a popular choice for both pilots based on the field and visiting aircraft from other places.  Grass is much easier on expensive airplane tires than pavement.  The runway is maintained by COPA #149 volunteers, including yearly rolling, seeding and fertilizing as well as grass-cutting during the months it is in use.
